I walked into my new high school, saw the sea of white faces, and knew I would stand out. I’m a biracial Korean/German, but I present as more Asian than German with a broader nose and straight hair.
I felt the unsteadiness creep up from my toes, saunter into my knees, and lock in. Deep Breath. Put one foot in front of the other. What I didn’t realize was how that would become my mantra throughout my life. It’s also called survival mode. And, yes, it takes a toll on your body.
During my time in this high school, I became quieter and more reserved. I didn’t speak up in class, which means I didn’t take up much space. Before I knew it, I became invisible. Even when I played sports, I kept my head down, did my thing, and went home. I was a field hockey goalie, so it was easy to forget me unless the small round ball was nearing my area. Then all eyes were on me, but my quiet self still didn’t take up the space that was expected of me and that I deserved.
Later in life, people saw my slightly almond-shaped eyes, assumed whatever they wanted, said crazy things to my face, and I shrunk, still not claiming my space.
