One of the classes I had to take in my Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation program was titled Ministry of Reconciliation. It was, by far, one of my favorite classes. One day, the professor brought in a guest speaker who led us through an exercise.

The guest lecturer told us to form a circle and begin walking around the room. When she prompted us to stop, she asked us to take notice of the person next to us and then encouraged us to begin walking again to match the step of the other person. During these short moments, I became aware of myself in context to others.

We did this for several minutes, and then she prompted us to turn and walk in a different direction, which meant we weren’t in step with the previous person. We walked for a minute, and then she told us to stop again. She instructed us to turn to the person nearest us.

I was fortunate to have been paired with a woman I had come to know, appreciate, admire, and respect over the three years. We locked eyes, staring intensely into each other’s souls. At first, I felt a bit awkward. I was in my head thinking; I’m a heterosexual. Is this ok? And then I sensed my body relax. Why isn’t it ok — one…
