Spirit, thank you for the word already chosen for this appointed time. Let this word for my year help me be focused yet liberated. Give me ears to hear and a heart to receive all that you have for me.

I used to think this was a crazy practice. I heard people talking about their word for the year, and I thought it was a little too woo-woo for me.

And then …

I heard God whisper a word into my heart for the upcoming year. My immediate thought was, “Naw. C’mon God. Really?”

Here’s the irony: it was the beginning of COVID and the word I heard was “adventure.”

If you’re getting ready to call God crazy, give me a moment to step out of the way so I can be out of the line of that lightning bolt headed for you.

As it turns out, that word served as a guide during COVID and beyond. First, when we were in lockdown, being adventurous meant being creative with the situation at hand. At the time, we lived in Southern California and didn’t have an outdoor space connected to our apartment. So, adventure entailed going for car rides…
