Guide me, Spirit, into understanding and knowing how to be present in each moment rather than living in the past or future.

You make so many choices every day. Maybe you’re spending too much time focused on the future or reveling in the past.

When you can focus and be present in the moments of your current day, you have the ability to change your inner world and be less stressed. You are able to experience life fully.

And, as any rule of thumb goes, there is a Light and a Dark to everything.

The Dark Side

If you are prone to having thoughts that take you in circles and your mind drifts too quickly, then you run the risk of having your emotions spin out.

Also, if you tend to be a bit too self-critical, you lose sight of your own values and core beliefs. That pushes you into a “I’m not good enough” or “What’s wrong with me?” state.

The Light Side

Instead of letting your thoughts become a distraction, try practicing mental noting.

What is Mental Noting?

Mental noting is the practice of using a word to direct your thinking, so it doesn’t drift off and become distracted. In mental noting, you are using one word to describe what you are experiencing.

When your mind drifts off to a situation, use a word to describe what you are feeling and experiencing, which allows you to be present with that thought and let it go. This allows you to contain your distracted mind.

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. — 2 Timothy 1:7
