Spirit, help me to be in a spiritual state of flow with You.

How many of you have heard the term “flow”? Yeah, it’s a hot word, but finding your spiritual flow when you don’t know what it is can be tricky, right?

Ok, let’s dive in.

As a verb, Merriam Webster describes “flow” as:

  • Proceed or be produced smoothly, continuously, and effortlessly.
  • Hang loosely in an easy and graceful manner.
  • Be available in copious quantities

Let’s break each one down with a connection to spirituality. Years ago, I used the word “zone” to describe my running. You could also describe “flow” in the same manner. It is a state where you are doing something that proceeds or is produced without effort.

Think of that thing you love to do.

Example #1

What happens to your heart, mind, and soul when you are doing something that you love to do? You get into a zone or state of flow, right? Everything becomes effortless and you forget about time.

Your mind doesn’t wander. You’re present in every moment. That’s flow.

Example #2

What happens when you’re somewhere that makes you happy and you’re just hanging out? Does your body relax and hang loosely? Are you a bit more relaxed as well? You’re not thinking about work or the kids or [fill in the blank]. You become more gracious because you’re in a “flow” state.

Pay attention to the welfare of your innermost being, for from there flows the wellspring of life.
