dry parched land on left with dead tree, grass and dirt path in middle, green grass with red flowers on right, stormy sky. Great Advantage of Writing: It Can’t Change Life, But Can Change You by Nancy Blackman. soul writing, contemplative writing, voice, listen, pause, selah

Let’s first start with a deep breath. Take a deep breath through your nose, allowing your stomach to be concave. You can place your hand on your belly if you like. As you are breathing in, count to five, then hold your breath for five counts. Exhale through your mouth, counting to five. Repeat that two more times

Some people say they aren’t writers. That’s cool. I get that, but that’s not the intention of soul writing. This kind of writing is the sort that will allow you to be changed. In other words, you can hold your emotions within you, but they only come out sideways through actions, comments, or signs of depression. Let’s face it, life happens, and you can’t change that. No one can. But … writing can change the way you perceive how life happens.

A friend died. You can’t change that, but writing about it can change how you view death or how that person’s life impacted yours. Maybe that person influenced you in remarkable ways. Maybe not. When you write about it, new feelings will most likely emerge. To be honest, they aren’t new feelings. I call them buried feelings. So, let your buried feelings come to the surface.
