Spirit, when grief arrives, help me to know how to embrace it and be with it and also help me to part with it when the time is right. Help me not to be afraid of grief but to know that it is a gentle reminder that life is fragile and we do not know what each moment holds.

I was chatting with a friend about grief the other day and how it can cause you to become numb. That’s the words she used. I nodded in agreement, even though she didn’t see me. Grief can be so consuming.

It has a particular power and yet there is also a power that we can give it if we aren’t careful.

Another dear friend did her doctorate work on Death and Dying. I edited her dissertation, and I clearly remember how she begins her abstract:
