Over and over throughout my life, I’ve heard, “You are too honest.” Even my parents uttered these words to me. When they said it, I was a bit shocked given the context of the conversation. I responded with, “And that’s bad … why?” I’ve also been told I’m too nice, but that’s for a different article.

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, honesty is the best policy, but seriously, what does that even mean? What does it mean to you?

I’ve been thinking about what honesty really means. With so much uncertainty in the world, because someone isn’t enough of this or less of that, I wonder how much of this is tied to expectations and how honest we are with ourselves.

In the book, Would I Lie to You? The Amazing Power of Being Honest in a World of Lies by Judi Ketteler, she covers topics of social honesty, honesty in different relationships, and the level of honesty we have with ourselves.

Let’s face it, if we’re not honest with ourselves, how can we be honest with anyone else?
