Spirit, let all of me — heart, mind, and soul — show me when too much is too much. Give me the courage to say “no” when I need to or say “yes” when I want to. For it is in honoring the true gifts of the season I am honoring you with action.

I was inspired by Marilyn Flower’s recent article about an acronym of HOW (Honesty, Openness, and Willingness) as a reminder that not everyone is “enjoying” themselves during the holidays.

They may be smiling, making snow angels with the kids or grandkids, or singing to Rudolph and/or Santa Baby while crying on the inside.”

This took me back to a time in my life when I was struggling with each upcoming holiday. The demands of showing up with a gift or facing shame and guilt became so overwhelming that I banned certain holidays in my existence — Christmas is one of them.

What?
