The truth is we had to close a business we had owned for about four years. Our marriage had hit more than just a speed bump. It had hit a veritable boulder. Both of us were feeling unsupported and unsupportive.

We ended up with a therapist who asked us one question in our first session, “Do each of you have an exit strategy?” We looked at each other sheepishly and nodded yes. Both of us were surprised.

Our therapist then explained that it was normal. Then she asked, “Are each of you willing to give up your exit strategy?” My husband said, “Yes, without a doubt.” They both looked at me. I took a deep breath and said, “No.”
