How I Found My Way Back to Writing
Learn From my Lessons
It all started when I was a kid. My dad gave me a locked journal. He said something about writing my thoughts down and keeping them hidden, and I appreciated it. My dad empowered me to do many things — to love photography, become a feminist, love gardening, and be a geek about writing and grammar.
That one gesture of giving me a journal helped me to unload, not just write. Julia Cameron talks a little about this in her book, “The Artists Way.” She calls them Morning Pages. It’s where you dump your brain onto a blank page. That’s what I did as a kid. I would run home from school and write in that little journal. Then I bought a larger notebook and began to write poetry.
Later, in college, when trying to decide what to declare as a major, I scrolled through the list that this university offered and saw Journalism. Moments later, I decided that wouldn’t make me any money, so I changed to Marketing.
Do you know what happens when you try to go down the wrong career path? You guessed it. BIG FAIL. Not only did I fail, but I also flunked out of college. You can read about it here:
