My heart whispered, “Enjoy.”

I picked up my brush, dipping it into the water, creating a wet area on my watercolor paper. I watched the water bubble up. Dipping my brush into paint, I then quickly touched the bubble of water, watching the paint spread quickly across the area of water.

Every time I sit and paint, my heart is full of joy, even in the mess-ups. In some way or another, I have been creative all my life. First, it was writing, then drawing and photography, and now I have added watercolor painting.

When I’m being creative, I have learned, especially with photography that you must be patient. Once I was at the zoo, shooting some of the animals. I came upon the big gorilla area and one of the gorillas made eye contact with me. I quickly shot a picture. This was back in the days of film photography. I sat and waited, gently touching the window, placing my open palm hand out to see if I could get the gorilla to mirror my hand. The gorilla kept staring at me as I patiently waited. Just when I was getting ready to leave, the gorilla smiled. And, just like that, I got the shot. I recognize how photography keeps me humble. In those moments of playing with the gorilla and waiting, I knew that patience was the key. And…
