Mom’s Post-Stroke Care and Confusion by Nancy Blackman, poetry, haiku, poem, writing challenge
Created in Canva by Nancy Blackman

I’m always up for a challenge, and Vidya posted this lovely Ten Word Story Challenge, which I did not do. Instead, I wrote five stanzas about my mom and her current situation.

Mom post-hospital:
at ninety-two, she’s so strong,
walking like a champ,

but still, she’s confused
from one minute to the next.
Refuses the help

she needs so badly.
Stubbornness taking control
of her mind and soul,

which keeps her alive
in a state of confusion.
But is she happy?

It is hard to tell
because she cannot talk well.
We fill in the blanks.

But now after reading Deb’s post, I re-wrote this in ten-word sentences. Ha! Challenge on.

My mom had a stroke; seems like a month now.

At ninety-two, she is stronger than we could imagine.
