Muting the Speaker Doesn’t Change the Outcome
What’s at the heart of true servant leadership?
Spirit, guide our hearts during this season of Lent. Help us to see what is important. Let us hold dear the memory of You, the One who always has our back, and never speaks an unkind word about us.
The words of Matthew 20:17–28 hold a timeless message about what’s at the heart of true servant leadership. It reminds us that true greatness comes from serving others, not seeking power or recognition.
Imagine your friend, Jesus, invites you into a group with 11 others. It reminds me of the cohort I met during my seminary experience. Our group became friends. By the end of our three-year journey, we were bonded and had become a close-knit community.
So, Jesus invites and welcomes you into this group with open arms. This group of 12 becomes a bonded, close-knit community, and you get to know Jesus by sharing loads of time together, including sharing meals. You learn how real Jesus is. You also realize there is something different about the authority placed upon Jesus’ life. You’re in awe. For a while, it’s like you were invited into the cool kids club.
Until one day, Jesus takes you and the group aside for a retreat. During that time away…
