Writing Prompt

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Misty Rae questions asking 17-year-olds what they want to be when they grow up because their brains aren’t fully formed. So, how can they possibly know? And, so the writing prompt triggered long-lost “feelings of anxiety, fear, shame, and confusion.” Being intelligent can be a curse. That presents too many choices.

Crippled by choice, more like. Too many options can be just as bad, if not worse than too few. It’s overwhelming. It’s terrifying. It seems what she really needed was for one person to tell her that she could change her mind. I had to figure that out for myself. And I did. The same way I find everything out, the hard way.

The problem became how to choose when you have so many interests. Oh, how I resonate with that!

Oh, what a university sweatshirt can do. Like helping a child hold fast to a dream to follow a career path, and yet…
