Thankfully I’m half Asian and lean towards a more dual thought approach, which is if you accept my meal when you’re sick there is never an expectation for that in return but I’m grateful I could help you and I know you might be open to receiving the next time.

And…yes, expectations bring so much suffering. I see it with people of all different cultures as they impinge their cultural norms on others in a third culture context.

Personally, I’m that person who thinks “I’ve just been invited to the home of a French person. I don’t know them very well so what do I offer as a gesture of kindness for opening their home? Google search here I come.”
