I live in the US and have lived here for most of my life. But I grew up as a Third Culture Kid (TCK), in communities that helped broaden my need for inclusion and diversity. I am also biracial Asian. As some of you might know, Asians tend to be very community minded.

It’s the difference between the “me” mentality versus the “we” mentality. In other words, I find Americans to be rooted in the “me” mentality and more so in Los Angeles. I attribute that to the influence of Hollywood, having lived in that area for the better part of 20 years.

The “we” mentality embraces the beauty of community. There is a blessing and compromise with community, but it is more about belonging. It speaks to a sense of deep peace within you that you know you belong to something bigger than yourself.

“Community is composed of that which we don’t attempt to measure, for which we keep no record and ask no recompense. Most are things we cannot measure no matter how hard we try.”— Dee Hock
