My Dad was always the wisest person I know, still is. I would put him in the category of a Sage. In Ancient Greek philosophy, a sage is described as one who has attained wisdom. He was patient, which is step one for understanding. He modeled learning by allowing me to make mistakes. As a parent, I think this was wise, but I didn’t like it as a child.

Me: Dad, how do you spell …?

Dad: Why don’t you look it up in the dictionary?

Do you see what he was doing? At an early age, he was teaching me how to seek knowledge on my own.

Me: Dad, do you think I should do this or that?

Dad: What do you think?

Frustrating as that was, he was gracing me with the gift of thinking on my own.

Me: Dad, I messed up.

Dad: What did you learn?

I find myself now asking others that question when they’ve incurred a hiccup in their lives. My Dad would sit beside me, not judging me for messing up, but encouraging me to learn.

My Dad was also a lifelong learner, which got passed down to me, despite my hiccups. I think having the…
