Some people use the three dots (…), also referred to as ellipses, in their writing to bring the reader to a pause. This invitation is a visual and literal deletion of words. These three dots can be a powerful way to invite your reader to the unspoken and deliberate silence. It can be a much-needed invitation to pause. It also invites the reader to imagine. It becomes the power of suggestion, drawing us into the moment, encouraging us to finish the thought. It becomes participatory.

The word “ellipsis,” as defined in the dictionary, is “the omission from speech or writing of a word or words that are superfluous or able to be understood from contextual clues.” It comes from the Greek word elleipsis, which means “leave out.”

It allows the reader to interpret for themselves, which can bring an aha moment!

Examples of using an ellipsis:

The leaves flutter as the wind shakes the tree, and …
She placed the brush onto the paper …
She whispered into his ear, “Please … tell her … the truth.”
