Use Marie Kondo’s Method of “Spark Joy” to Say No to Unnecessary Activities

O Spirit, tidy my soul that I may be present to You.

By now, I’m guessing you have heard of Marie Kondo and her method of “does it spark joy?” She uses this concept as she helps people declutter, picking up each item, holding it, and allowing it to speak to you. Too woo-woo for you? Hang on. Keep reading.

As you pick up each item, does it spark joy within you? If not, it gets tossed to a “leave-the-house” pile. If it does spark joy, it gets put into a “keeper” pile. And, last, if you’re unsure, it’s ok. It gets placed in an “I don’t know” pile.

I was talking to a friend the other day who confessed that she’s a people pleaser and takes on too much. Since I resonated a little bit with her statement, I wondered if Marie Kondo’s concept can help with saying no.

Perhaps you’re an overachiever [Nancy is raising her hand]. Perhaps you’re a perfectionist [Nancy keeps her hand up]. Or, maybe, like my friend, you’re a people pleaser, struggling to say no to activities, projects, and duties.
