As you ponder your way in life, may you always know that you matter and that you are loved.

Everybody wants to be free. In some countries, there is no choice. In other countries, there is an annual celebration of independence and freedom.

But … what does it mean to be free?

For some, spiritual freedom is something to hang on to. It gives you purpose and a deep-seated knowledge that you have freedom. Does that equate to peace?

The Biblical word for freedom is liberty. The dictionary defines freedom as “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.” In the New Testament, the Greek word for “freedom” is ἐλεύθερος (eléftheros), which, in this case, refers to “free from sin.”

This directly points to John 8:36, “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.”

It seems like Jesus is saying, “If you believe in Me, you are free.” The End. Right? Except that if you’re a student of the Bible, you know there is always something theological to be questioned and discussed.

The function of freedom is to free someone else.
