When we are caught in humor, all of life seems to fall away. I think of humor as deep laughing — the belly laughs. I also think of humor as silliness and a joy that penetrates my soul in ways that bring my body to rest.

Laughter and humor can help us be content, to see life and ourselves with lightness. Have you ever had an embarrassing moment — fallen in public only to get up feeling clumsy and shy? Have you also witnessed (or maybe this is you) someone who falls and laughs at themselves? I want to be the latter more than the former. I want to laugh at myself more often. How about you?

Let’s be clear upfront. Laughing at ourselves is different than laughing at others. Humor is an essential life skill that you can embrace to help you see the lighter side of life, not as ridicule or pain towards another, or worse, to make yourself feel more superior, which is the theory of superiority.

The sense of humor I’m referring to is like surprise or relief theory. Surprise theory is when your awareness of a situation suddenly changes. Relief theory uses humor to relieve tension. It helps us face our fears, release nervous energy, and overcome…
