Why Anger Never Wins: Three Ways To Overcome and Be More Compassionate

I had just witnessed a hit-and-run accident. I was driving to work when I neared an intersection. Cars were slowing down, and I followed suit. Suddenly, I looked up to see the bodies of two young women flying in the air.

Was I seeing what I think I’m seeing?!

I was amidst a sea of cars but immediately pulled over, jumping out, wading in between the vehicles towards the bodies, now lying on the pavement. My EMT training rushed back. I kept saying, “Triage, triage.” A man came running over to me. “Are you ok here? I’m going to go after the driver.”

“Go!” I said, “Go!”

I looked back down at the two young ladies. The cars were swirling around me in rush hour traffic. Another woman heeded the call of humanity. I saw her making her way over to me. I kneeled and tapped the shoulder of one of the girls. “Hello?” I asked. I repeated this. No answer. No response. I quickly moved to the other girl, but the other woman had already met her calling for that moment. Her hands were outstretched as she hailed the Heavens to come down.

Then a man stuck his head out of his car window and said, “You should get a blanket on that girl.” I reeled on my feet, staring at him. Expletives were roaming around in my head, but I backed away. Please
