…etter, but now this next generation Emily Post is telling us our politeness is…rude! Not to mention taking shoes off in the house is standard politeness in many other cultures (e.g., Ukrainian) and not just Asians.

YES! YES! YES! In fact, in the Russian culture, if you don't take your shoes off you are the one considered rude. It is an insult to the homeowner, which is similar in Asian households.
